چکیده

Web sites need fast and effective navigation systems. An eye tracking laboratory study with n = 120 participants was conducted to compare the influence of different navigation designs (vertical versus dynamic menus) and task complexity (simple versus complex navigation tasks) on user performance, navigation strategy, and subjective preference. With vertical menus, users needed less eye fixations, were faster and more successful. We conclude that, firstly, vertical menus fit better to perception and cognition than dynamic menus, where the navigation items are hidden and must be accessed by an additional mouse click. Secondly, navigation systems should be extended with different kinds of navigation items adapted to the complexity of the users’ navigation tasks, because users tend to switch their navigation strategy when confronted with complex tasks. ! 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: In order to identify users’ visual attention to left- and right-aligned menus on web pages, fixation count index (FCI) was assessed for both left and right menus using eye tracker to determine which menu is preferred by users in terms of visual attention. Methodology: In total, 116 pages with their menus aligned to left or right, classified into three groups, namely Persian pages, En...

Impact of Spatial Reference Frames on Human Performance in Virtual Reality User Interfaces

The design of virtual reality user interfaces (VRUI) is still an open field of research and development. One category of VRUI is the 3D floating menus that can be manipulated by users in free space. These menus can contain various controls such as buttons, sliders, and text. This article presents an experimental study that aims at testing the impact of five spatial reference frames on human per...

Performance Benefits of Simultaneous Over Sequential Menus as Task Complexity Increases

To date, experimental comparisons of menu layouts have concentrated on variants of hierarchical structures of sequentially presented menus. Simultaneous menus—layouts that present multiple active menus on a screen at the same time—are an alternative arrangement that may be useful in many Web design situations. This article describes an experiment involving a between-subject comparison of simult...

Expandable Indexes Versus Sequential Menus for Searching Hierarchies on the World Wide Web

An experiment is reported that compared expandable indexes providing full menu context with sequential menus providing only partial context. Menu depth was varied using hierarchies of 2, 3, and 4 levels deep in an asymmetric structure of 457 root level items. Menus were presented on the World Wide Web within a browser. Participants searched for specific targets. Results suggest that reducing th...
